Marathon Training: Three Weeks Out

In Life, Marathon on February 1, 2012 at 10:24 am

Greetings and happy New Year. I know it’s been a while since my last update, so I’ll cover as much as possible here.

My marathon is in 18 days. I wrapped up my 14th week of training with a 20 mile run. This was the fourth time that I had taken on (and completed) a distance of 13 miles or more, and the 2nd time I ran the 13 miles without stopping. I have been fighting off some varying levels of knee pain the past few weeks, with little success, but I have at least confirmed that I can travel 20 miles on foot.

Unfortunately, I did have trouble starting back up after taking a break. I took a short walk, ran another mile, then was incapable of running any more after another short walk. My knee just wouldn’t let me. I’m taking it slowly this week and next as my mileage dips down (I’m down to 12 miles this weekend, 8 the next), and hopefully I’ll be able to fight through anything that comes up on the 19th.

On a lighter note, if anyone’s in the Austin area on February 19th, you should come downtown and cheer me on! You can find info about viewing the race here, and you can approximate what time I will be at each spot on the route using this chart. I’ll be in the “Mid-Pack Runners”.

You can also track my running using the Austin Marathon App and looking up my name. If any of you do come cheer everyone on, I cannot fully express how much I and my fellow runners will appreciate it. Kelly hung around and cheered me on at one point during my run this weekend, and it was a huge boost to my spirits. I hope to see some of you there!
