Marathon Training: Weeks Four & Five

In Life, Marathon on November 29, 2011 at 6:59 pm

Week four ended with a 10 mile run. I was slightly worried, but it wound up going off without a hitch. I spent most of the run at a decent pace, and I also took the time to play with incline, setting the machine to a 2 or 3 for almost the whole time. On top of all that, I’m still on a nine minute mile pace: 10 miles in 90 minutes.

I made a pleasant discovery while selecting a movie to watch while running. I’ve been using Netflix and Hulu+ on my iPhone to keep myself entertained (the tv selection at the gym really sucks) and today I decided to watch a movie. 90 minutes is a almost perfect for watching a bad action movie, so I decided to watch “Crank 2: High Voltage”. Pros: lots of action, car chases and people running. Very encouraging for someone trying to keep pace on a treadmill. Cons: lots of sex and naked people, which can be a little awkward if the runner next to you happens to look over.

Week five was wrapped around Thanksgiving, though I did my best to not let it disrupt my schedule too much. I opted to run on Friday instead of Thursday, mostly because I wanted to sleep in on Thursday. As an added bonus, I ran outside on Friday, taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather we’re having. This also gave me a chance to test out the iMapMyRun app on my phone. It worked for the most part, though the settings weren’t fine tuned yet (I hadn’t turned on any of the bells and whistles, like announcing mileage) and the GPS is a little sloppy, so I think it recorded a lot of lateral motion that padded the length of my run. I’m planning on giving it another shot when I run my half marathon on the 11th, though I will map the route out first as a back up.

Six miles on tap tomorrow morning, and twelve on Saturday! No telling what my pacing will be like: I was doing 8 1/2 minute miles this weekend!
