if you have a minute…

watch this video. i’m sure many of you have already seen it, but take a minute to watch it again. if it’s your first time, watch it a couple of times, because it took me two viewings to figure out what was going a matter of fact, watch his apology on Letterman first:

sounds angry, doesn’t he? but if you listen closely, there’s a lot of shock and hurt in there: he seems genuinely hurt when he hears people chuckling in the audience (and people will say that was the only genuine thing about the apology).

now watch the video. then watch it again.

here’s what i see when i watch that: a joke that went wrong. i’m talking crash and burn, plunge into the ocean, no survivors wrong. what i see is a response to the heckler that begins with the “fifty years ago” line and keeps going until he starts using the N-word. what i hear is an embodiment of a character, a mocking of the response that the black heckler would have received fifty years ago: “go get him! kick him him out and stick a fork in his ass!”

that’s not to say it was a GOOD joke, but it was a joke nonetheless. the problem is that the joke was directed at a man who was already heckling him, and was therefor not inclined to laugh at said joke. thus, it devolves into a shouting match. never mind the fact that the video of the event is incomplete: there is a gap in the video (the camera filled up and a new video file had to be begun?), and we don’t see the initial heckling that caused michael to respond.

you can go ahead and tell me that i’m being to easy on him, that i’m cutting him too much slack, and i will agree with you on that: i am very much inclined to see the best in people and give them the benefit of doubt. however, being someone who has on many occasions said things in jest that others deem offensive, especially in an ironic manner (which is what i believe micahel was going for), i think that this whole thing is a bad joke that got blown way out of proportion.

thoughts? responses? cries for burning in effigy?
