Man, that SUCKED Category: Sports

Last night was frustrating. Even more so than Tuesday, last night really sucked. Last night, in a very disappointing 98 – 74 loss to the Miami Heat, the Mavericks style of play was… bad. That’s the only polite word to use to describe it. Just plain bad. Miami spanked us, and we let them do it. This was game play that rivaled the sloppiness that Miami dispayed in games 1 and 2. More so than any other player, coach, or style of defence, the Mavericks (and Miami last week) have been defeating themselves in this series. Rushed shots, missed freethrows, botched lay ups and dunks, and TURNOVERS!!! These teams have been killing themselves, hobbling through these finals, shooting 40% from the field, scoring less then 15 points in a quarter, and missing freethrow after freethrow after freethrow. Dirk Nowitzki missed a freethrow to tie the game on Tuesday. DIRK NOWITZKI!!! And Shaq shot over 50% the last two nights! WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON IN MIAMI!!!

okay. stop. breathe. This is quite depressing, though. These have been sloppy, sloppy games. Last night should serve to point this out to the Mavs. We lost by over 20 points, and frankly, we should have lost by just as much on Tuesday. And Miami should have lost by that much on Sunday. Dallas on Tuesday (and Miami on Sunday) managed to spit and fight back to bring those games close, when they should have been blowouts. Dallas led by 27 at one point on Sunday, but started getting a little cocky and lazy. And with the way we were shooting on Tuesday, there wasn’t any reason for Miami not to have ground us in to floorboards. They actually pulled it off last night. Sure, they had some bad plays (again, turnovers, turnovers, turnovers), but we tended to follow them up with brick after brick, not to mention that lovely exchange where we managed 4 offensive rebounds and couldn’t drop one basket. That there’s good basketball.

I’m reminded of long ago, when I was a much smaller boy (I think I was only 5′ 6″ back then), sitting in the back row of Reunion Arena. This is a time before Nowitzki and Nash, before the American Airlines Center and Mark Cuban, before Avery Johnson and Don Nelson, before the Stars won the Cup and the Cowboys won the Bowl, before Jason Kidd and Jamal Mashburn, when the Mavericks were still a very young team, only a year older than I am, and man did they suck. The arena was half empty, the playing was mediocre, and the team was stocked with players like Rolando Blackman, Mark Aguirre, Derek Harper, and Roy Tarpley. You know when kids play basketball, and all the teams are named after professional teams? This was back when there wasn’t even a Mavericks in my league.

That was how they played last night. If we’d been in Dallas, I would have expected to look up to the rafters and see banners advertising the Sidekicks.

Time to take a break, rest up, get our heads straight, and get mad. We’re 4-2 this season against the Heat: we can do this. We will do this.
