and the days just keep getting better

Any body heard me bitch about my apartment lately? Well I now have yet another thing to bitch about. On top of the fact that we don’t have a super, we don’t have anyone to contact on the weekends if something breaks, we don’t have heat, we’re getting over-charged by ConEd, our hallways smell like urine and garbage, and someone stole our table from the basement, we now have this lovely issue: someone broke into our apartment. They busted open my fucking window, climbed into my room, and stole my laptop and camera which I bought (drumrole please)…… THREE WEEKS AGO!!!

Needless to say, I’m a little upset about this. You see, there’s no gate on my window, so there really wasn’t anything impeding the culprit from coming inside, aside from the glass. Once inside, he or she jumped in, grabbed my laptop, it’s charger, and my camera, all off of my beside table, and left. There was no hunting around for anything: they knew exactly what they wanted an took it very efficiently. They then proceeded up the fire escape (not down, because the ladder wasn’t down) and escaped either into another apartment, or to the roof, which means that the person either lives in or has easy access to our building or one of the two next to us. It would be nice to assume it’s our building, but the fencing on the roof that separates the buildings has nice, large, people-sized holes in it for convenient movement. And I sadly cannot assume that the culprit lives here, because the front door is constantly left either open or unlocked by residents too fucking lazy to take their keys with them when they run to the bodega, so anybody could have waltzed in, gone to the roof, and walked down.

That being said, I think it’s someone who lives in our building. It’s no secret that we’ve made enemies in the building: there’s the whole issue with the heat and the landlord, which is troublesome because the building manager’s girlfriend lives in the building, plus we’ve locked people outside numerous times by locking the front door when they leave it open, as well as at least one person who claimed to be a friend of a resident who I refused to let in the building. I wouldn’t be surprised in the least if the culprit lived upstairs and had walked around on the fire escape before and seen my computer, and then just decided to bust in and snatch it, perhaps to have it, perhaps to pawn it, but most likely just to fuck with me.

Whatever. We’re gonna make some calls on Monday, and we’ll most likely have to retain a lawyer to sue our landlord. At least there was very little content on the computer that wasn’t on my desktop, the notable exceptions being my most recent photos and up-to-date banking info. Thank god all my music is on the hard drive in the living room. Lesson learned, life goes on.
